Continuing with a mecha theme for the moment I turn my attention to the massive Mobile Suit Gundam franchise. For the most part this franchise, particularly in the early days of my anime fandom, just never interested me. Mecha are a heavily, and quite possibly over, used trope in anime. Therefore there are generally two things I'm going to look for in a mecha show before I fully approve of it:
1) The mecha make logical sense within the universe; and
2) The show is about the characters using the mecha, rather than about the mecha.

The exploration of space has been the dream for many, and it is my contention that film/tv (including anime) is the medium best suited to the legends and myths of space.

The world saw, and heard, the real thing on TV so it is only natural that tales in the same medium will resonate more than tales in other media.

Within the context of the original Macross, Lynn Minmei is annoying but necessarily so. Certainly her presence within the original is not enough to qualify as the most annoying anime character ever.
( Unfortunately her influence went further than that... )

Kinoshita from  Rocket Girls is the mission controller, a salaryman, but still holds true to The Dream Of Space.

For the most part he doesn't speak of  The Dream all that much but he has a magical moment in Episode 3. His moment starts about two minutes into the embedded video (obviously this is a spoiler for those who haven't seen Rocket Girls yet ( Read more... )

For me a favourite will be something that I watch primarily, if not purely, for pleasure. There may well be substance to it, but that alone won't make it a favourite.
